Dr. Sunny HUANG Qing (PhD)

After graduation

Dr. Qing Huang, Sunny is a lecturer at the School of Foreign Languages, Huizhou University, in Guangdong, China. She holds a PhD in English Studies from City University of Hong Kong. She has been teaching an ESP nursing course and an ESP medical course for more than 6 years. Her research interests include ESP (English for Specific Purposes), English language education, health communication, and discourse analysis. Her recent research has appeared in journals such as RELC Journal.

Biography

HUANG Qing, Sunny got her Master degree (with Distinction) in English Studies from CityU, and Bachelor degree in English Teaching (a key teacher- training major in China & Guangdong Province) from South China Normal University. She worked as an English teacher in Huizhou Health Sciences Polytechnic in Guangdong after graduation, and her courses included College English, Nursing English and Medical English.

She is pursuing her Ph.D. degree in the fields of English for Specific Purposes and health communication. Her Ph.D. research explores the perceptions of engagement practices in nursing clinical communication with a focus on nursing college students in Mainland China.

English for Specific Purposes, descriptive discourse analysis, health communication and corpus linguistics.

Title of thesis
The Perceptions of Engagement Practices in Clinical Communication: A Case Study of Nursing College Students in Mainland China

 

Short abstract of thesis
Qing's proposed thesis aims to explore college nursing students' perceptions of engagement practices in clinical communication in an ESP course in Mainland China. She investigates nursing students’ perceptions of engagement in nursing communication, identifies features of the spoken language and communication skills in their current engagement practice(s) by video-recording their role-play communication, and develops related teaching pedagogy that is intended to inform ESP pedagogy on engagement in Mainland China. .

Biography

YU Qianwen, Joyce got her Bachelor degree in Finance from the University of International Business and Economics, and Master degree in Applied English Linguistics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. degree in the fields of discourse analysis and health communication. Her Ph.D. research explores the nature of cardiologist-patient relationship in the primary care consultation, with a focus on the linguistic resources and communication strategies employed by the cardiologist for the delivery of patient-centered care.

Biography

JIA Wenyun got her Bachelor degree in English from the Northwest A&F University in China, and Master degree in English Language Learners from Vanderbilt University in the US. 

She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. degree with Dr. Jack PUN in the fields of translanguaging, English reading education, and EMI in the Chinese context.

Title of thesis
An Exploratory Study of High Schools Students’ Disciplinary Reading Performance in English Medium Instruction Context: Students’ Self-Directed Reading Strategies in China

​

Short abstract of thesis

In the light of reading theory and self-directed learning theory, Wenyun’s study explores high school students’ self-directed reading strategies when engaging in disciplinary texts in EMI (English medium instruction) classrooms in mainland China. Drawing on multiple sources of data (i.e., surveys, semi-structured interviews, reading journals, think aloud method, and stimulated recalls), this study aims to reveal what kinds of self-directed strategies these Chinese students use for disciplinary reading, why they choose these strategies, and how they feel about these reading strategies useful or not.

​​Jason LU Dunming (PhD), supervision until 2024 (Department of English, CityU)

Biography

LU Dunming holds a Bachelor degree in Linguistics and Sociology (Distinction) from the University of Manchester, and a Master of Science in TESOL from the University of Edinburgh. He is CELTA-certified and worked as an English teacher in Guangdong after graduation. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof.Jack PUN in the fields of translanguaging and English language eduction. His Ph.D. research aims to design a genre-based EAP course incorporating pedagogical translanguaging and assess its effectiveness on the development of tertiary level second language learners’ mastery of rhetorical organisation and use lexical bundles in the target discipline.

Title of thesis

The effectiveness of implementing translanguaging pedagogy in genre-based EAP course in English medium instruction Chinese universities

​

Short abstract of thesis

In English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) context, students generally have difficulties in academic writing. Additional support such as English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is therefore needed to develop students’ academic literacy to meet the demand of the academic community. Inspired by the concept of translanguaging pedagogy, Dunming's study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of implementing pedagogical translanguaging in a genre-based EAP course on the development of Chinese students’ academic literacy in the target discipline. Adopting a design-based research methodology, this study aims to understand L2 students’ needs for academic writing support, develop a genre-based EAP course with the implementation of pedagogical translanguaging and evaluate its effectiveness on academic literacy improvement by analysing students’ performance and understanding beliefs from teachers and students.

Spencer SUN Xiaohui (PhD), supervision until 2024 (Department of English, CityU)

Biography

Sun Xiaohui got her Bachelor degree in English from the Northeast Normal University, and Master degree in Linguistics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She worked as an English teacher in a senior high school in Qingdao after graduation. Now she takes the responsibility to teach sections as a lecturer in a university in Jinan. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. degree in the fields of language learning motivation, investment, identity and EMI in mainland China and Hong Kong.
